LIQUIDS FOR δ2H, δ17O, and δ18O on LGR T-LWIA-45-EP

Water samples for δ2H, δ17O, and δ18O analysis should be filtered to 0.45 μm and stored in a cool, dark location prior to submission. We can filter samples for you, please see pricing tab for current costs.

Samples should be submitted in individually-labeled, air-tight glass or plastic bottles/vials with minimal headspace. If the samples are being shipped by air, use plastic (e.g. HDPE) bottles and fill to only 2/3 total volume to prevent cracking or leaking by freezing.

Include a paper copy of the LGR sample submission form with the samples. You must also submit a digital copy of the form to isotopes@uky.edu. Work cannot begin on samples until these materials are received.

Refrigeration or poisoning (e.g. by HgCl2 or I2 + KI) is not necessary for this type of analysis.

We cannot accept poisoned samples for analysis on the LGR. If you know or believe your samples are saline (> 3 PSU) notify KSIGL staff ahead of time and record the salinity on the sample submission form.

WATERS FOR δ13CDIC ON GASBENCH

Waters samples for δ13CDIC analysis should be collected without headspace, and must be filtered to 0.45 μm prior to submission to remove organic C-bearing particulates. Alternatively, we can filter samples for you immediately upon arrival at KSIGL. Samples should be refrigerated as soon as possible after collection.

Samples should be shipped in individually-labeled, butyl rubber septum-capped vials or Labco 12 mL Exetainers without headspace as soon as possible after collection. Please make arrangements with us beforehand so we can prepare and analyze the samples immediately upon arrival. If the vials use Teflon/silicone or PTFE/silicone septa, you can replace the PTFE/silicone septum with a butyl rubber septum*. Inorganic carbon will diffuse through Teflon/silicone and PTFE/silicone septa.

Include a paper copy of the IRMS sample submission form with the samples. You must also submit a digital copy of the form to isotopes@uky.edu. Work cannot begin on samples until these materials are received.

We will refrigerate your samples on arrival. Please indicate in the liquid sample submission form if you’ve poisoned your samples with e.g. CuSO4 or I2 + KI. We cannot accept samples treated with HgCl2.

*For local customers, we can provide pre-cleaned Labco Exetainers with fresh caps and butyl septa for direct sampling. The butyl rubber septa used on Exetainers are the most resistant to diffusion of inorganic C.

WATERS FOR δ13CDOC ON GASBENCH

Submission requirements are the same as for δ13CDIC except non-butyl septa are acceptable.
